What are dental crowns used for?
A dental crown is a prosthetic restoration that recreates the anatomical and functional integrity of a tooth. Crowns are placed on damaged teeth, severely destroyed teeth, or on a dental implant when the tooth is missing.
A dental crown can protect a traumatised tooth from further destruction, restore the integrity and aesthetics of the smile, and bring back the tooth’s chewing function. A crown can be placed on any tooth in the dental arch.
Indications for crown placement
Tooth enamel wear
Non-carious lesions
Tooth trauma
Diastemas and tooth spacing (gaps between teeth)
Protecting the walls of a damaged tooth
Replacement of existing crowns

Main types of dental crowns
Dental crowns can be divided into 2 types:
- metal-containing (most often porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns)
- and metal-free (ceramic).
Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns
The core of such a crown is a metal framework covered with a ceramic shell to give the prosthetic construction a more aesthetic appearance. There are no strict indications as to which part of the dental arch can be restored with porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns, but where possible it is better to avoid using such restorations in the smile zone. This is because, in the event of gum recession, the metal framework may show through and make the tooth look unattractive. Today, more and more dentists are moving away from this type of restoration and prefer materials with better aesthetic properties — ceramics and zirconium dioxide. The service life of porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns is about 5–7 years.
Ceramic crowns
They are highly durable and offer excellent aesthetics thanks to a wide shade range and very good translucency (partial light transmission). In our clinic, ceramic crowns are made on a special milling machine; full fabrication of one such prosthetic restoration takes about 30 minutes.
These restorations are primarily recommended for anterior teeth. Thanks to their strength, restoration of posterior (chewing) teeth is also possible and very popular among patients. The average service life of ceramic crowns is 8–10 years.
Below we describe the types of ceramic crowns that we use in our practice:
E-max crowns (lithium disilicate)
These are all-ceramic dental crowns that can be made both using the conventional method (by a dental technician) and with computerised equipment on a milling unit. This material has light-refracting properties and looks very similar to natural tooth enamel. When the work is done well, not every dentist will be able to tell that it is a crown and not a natural tooth. In terms of strength, E-max crowns are close to tooth enamel, and this helps prevent wear of the opposing tooth’s enamel.
Cost of E-max crowns: 20 000 UAH
Feldspathic ceramic crowns
This is a hybrid ceramic supplied as blocks for use with a milling unit. It comes in a wide range of shades and can reproduce the natural colour of the tooth. The main advantage is that such crowns are made very quickly, because they do not need to be sintered, only ground and polished. This significantly saves the patient’s time, as on average it takes about 30 minutes from the first visit to the prosthodontist to the placement of the crown in the mouth.
Cost of feldspathic ceramic crowns: 20 000 UAH
Zirconia dioxide crowns veneered with ceramics
This is a “reduced anatomy” crown design. There is also an alternative, “full anatomy”, where the framework anatomically reproduces the natural tooth, and then the technician or prosthodontist covers it with a thin ceramic layer, adding shades and anatomical imperfections to achieve a natural appearance. The advantages of this design are its high aesthetic qualities and biocompatibility. However, there is also a drawback — the ceramic layer may chip off the zirconia core.
Cost of zirconia dioxide crown: 20 000 UAH
Zirconia dioxide crowns
Ceramic dental crowns manufactured from discs or blocks for use with a milling unit. After the crown is milled, this material is sintered in a special furnace, where it acquires a pearly appearance and increased strength. The crown is then manually ground and polished, and afterwards either covered with glaze (for full-anatomy crowns) or layered with ceramics (for reduced-anatomy crowns). These are the strongest crowns; the service life of zirconia dioxide crowns is 10–15 years.
Cost of a zirconia crown: 20 000 UAH
Which dental crown to choose
Crowns for front teeth
To achieve high aesthetic results, ceramic E-max crowns are an excellent choice.
Crowns for chewing teeth
Chewing teeth require strong prosthetic restorations. The most durable material for this is zirconia dioxide.
Crowns on dental implants
A zirconia crown will be the best choice for implant-supported restoration due to the strength of the construction.

Possible complications after crown placement

- Periapical periodontitis
- Allergic reactions
- Bite changes
Care for crowns
There is nothing complicated about caring for crowns, provided that oral hygiene is adequate (thorough toothbrushing twice a day). It is additionally recommended to use an irrigator 1–2 times a week and carefully clean the interdental spaces with floss (dental floss) or a special interdental brush, the size of which will be selected by your dentist. Whenever possible, hard foods should be eaten with care.
Alternative to dental crowns
Depending on the type and location of the damage, dental crowns may have alternatives. For example, these may include:
Veneers, or even lumineers, can be used as an alternative to full crowns when the defect is minor and located on the front surface of the tooth (for example, a discolouration defect).
Microposthetics can also be an alternative to a full dental crown. For example, inlays/onlays on chewing teeth can mask extensive tooth damage while preserving the tooth’s anatomy and aesthetics.

Advantages of dental prosthetics at our clinic
In-house laboratory
Our own CEREC digital dental CAD/CAM laboratory for manufacturing dental crowns, onlays, veneers, and bridge prostheses. We work without intermediaries, which significantly reduces the cost and turnaround time of prosthetic treatment.
In-house CT scanner
Our clinic is equipped with a modern dental CBCT scanner, Dentsply Sirona Orthophos, which allows us to perform precise radiographic diagnostics and detailed planning before starting prosthetic treatment.
Dental microscope
In many cases, root canals need to be filled before prosthetic treatment. Working on the root canals under a dental microscope is not only more convenient for the dentist, but also a guarantee of a high-quality result for the patient.
