Straumann implants: history, features, models
Straumann Group originated from a research institute founded by Reinhard Straumann in Switzerland in 1954. The company’s first developments were related to research into materials and alloys, including those for medical use.
In 1967, the company was headed by Fritz Straumann, the founder’s son. In 1974, Straumann produced its first hollow cylindrical titanium implants — a milestone that marked the beginning of the development of the Straumann dental implant system.
Today, Straumann Group works in implantology, prosthetics, orthodontics, biomaterials, and digital dentistry.
Features of Straumann implants
Roxolid alloy
Roxolid is a patented Straumann alloy used in selected dental implant lines. It consists of 85% titanium and 15% zirconium. According to the manufacturer, Roxolid has 80% higher tensile strength compared with standard Grade 4 titanium.
Thanks to the high strength of the material, in certain clinical situations the doctor can use smaller-diameter implants or shorter implants. This may be relevant in cases of bone deficiency, when it is important to reduce the invasiveness of the procedure and, where possible, avoid or minimize bone augmentation.
SLA/SLActive surface
Implants with an SLA surface undergo two processing stages: first sandblasting, then acid etching. As a result, a micro-rough surface is formed, increasing the contact area between the implant and bone tissue and supporting the osseointegration process.
SLActive is a hydrophilic modification of the SLA surface. Because it interacts better with biological fluids, this surface promotes more predictable initial healing and accelerated osseointegration. Implants with an SLActive surface can be useful in more complex clinical protocols, especially when high primary stability and early or immediate loading are important.
Such implants may be considered for patients with risk factors that require particularly careful implant planning. These factors may include insufficient bone volume or reduced bone quality.
Bone Control Design
Bone Control Design is a patented design concept for the coronal part of the implant. The features of the neck shape and thread are aimed at preserving the volume of the alveolar ridge and supporting the soft tissues around the implant.
CrossFit connection
Straumann implant models
Our clinics place Straumann BLT, Straumann BLC, and Straumann BLX implants.
BLT Bone Level Tapered
BLT Bone Level Tapered implants are made from the Roxolid alloy. They have an SLActive surface, a CrossFit connection, and a Bone Control Design aimed at preserving bone tissue in the implant area.
Possible clinical situations for use:
- implant placement in the area of the lower central and lateral incisors;
- implant placement in the area of the upper lateral incisors;
- narrow edentulous sites;
- wide edentulous sites;
- limited thickness of the alveolar ridge;
- sufficient thickness of the alveolar ridge;
- complete edentulism of both jaws;
- partial edentulism of one or both jaws.
BLX Bone Level X
BLX Bone Level X implants are made from the Roxolid alloy. They have an SLActive surface, a TorcFit connection — a universal implant-abutment connection — and an active bidirectional thread designed for high primary stability.
Possible clinical situations for use:
- implant placement in the area of the central and lateral incisors of the lower and upper jaws;
- narrow and wide edentulous sites;
- limited thickness of the alveolar ridge;
- sufficient thickness of the alveolar ridge;
- complete or partial edentulism of both jaws;
- implant placement in the area of different tooth groups, in soft or dense bone, with the possibility of early or immediate loading when clinically indicated.
BLC Bone Level Conical
BLC Bone Level Conical implants have a design with a conical apex and optimized thread aimed at achieving high primary stability, especially in more complex bone conditions. They also feature TorcFit™ — a universal conical-hexagonal implant-abutment connection compatible with other new-generation Straumann systems.
Possible clinical situations for use:
- implant placement in the area of the upper and lower central and lateral incisors;
- implant placement in narrow or wide edentulous sites;
- limited thickness of the alveolar ridge;
- sufficient volume of the alveolar ridge;
- complete or partial edentulism of both jaws;
- implant placement in the area of different tooth groups, in soft or dense bone, with the possibility of early or immediate loading when clinically indicated.
Conclusions
Straumann develops implant systems, materials, and digital solutions for different clinical situations in dental implantation. This manufacturer’s systems have clinical research behind them and are used in protocols with different requirements for primary stability, osseointegration, and subsequent prosthetic restoration.
The implant model is selected individually, taking into account the volume and quality of bone tissue, the placement area, the type of future prosthetic restoration, and the patient’s overall health. With proper planning, good hygiene, regular preventive check-ups, and adherence to the doctor’s recommendations, an implant can serve for many years.
- BLT series implants are used in many standard and moderately complex clinical situations, especially when primary implant stability is important.
- BLX series implants are designed for clinical situations where high primary stability is required, especially for immediate or early loading protocols.
- BLC series implants have a conical design, a TorcFit™ connection, and can be used in different clinical situations depending on bone tissue volume, the implantation area, and the prosthetic plan.
